Erect Match Standing in Blu-tack

Erect Match Standing in Blu-tack
Oil on cotton on MDF
62x69mm

In a way this is a tribute to New Plymouth and our famous Wind Wand sculpture by reknowned international kinetic artist Len Lye.

It's also a homage to blu-tack.  I have recently been considering using blu-tack to "paint" with, however a cursory Google search reveals that like everything else I think of, it has already been done. This is one of the most thought provoking and stimulating sites on contemporary art I have viewed in recent years:   Worsley Institute of Blu-Tack Art

Dead Rose in a Bottle

Dead Rose in a Bottle
Oil on linen mounted on MDF board
115x110mm
sold
I've prepared a few small linen panels for a change of surface to my usual gessoed hardboard. There is really nothing that can compare to painting on linen, it's a joy to paint onto, and it encourages a different handling and application of the paint. At the meagre price I can sell these paintings for, I can't really justify the expense of linen, however I have a few offcuts from larger paintings that I can use.

Match With Straw

Match With Straw
Oil on gessoed board
60x95mm
This was just a chance arrangement I spotted. I liked the sepentine movement of the dried grass straw against the static horizontal of the match. I guess you could kindle a fire with a match and enough straws.

Cotton Bud With Match
Watercolour on Velin de Lana
95x130mm or 3.5x5"
I painted a cotton bud I'd been using to smudge pastel. I wasn't very happy with the first attempt so I abandoned it and started again resulting in the version at the top here. Then I went back to the earlier version and worked on it some more and added the balancing match. Then I felt like painting a match by itself.
