I thought I'd try grinding the lapis lazuli pigment in acrylic medium, reasoning that the acrylic is colourless compared to the yellowish oil and so perhaps lending more clarity to the subtle colour.
When painting miniatures I've often joked about painting a dolly's tea set! I put the ubiquitous matchstick alongside for scale as it didn't seem to work otherwise.
This was given to me as a joke gift by someone who knows I have painted both matches and pencils. It's taken me a while to finally getting around to painting it, and I think it is because it's like someone else's joke. But I like the fact that the act of painting it gives it one further level of irony. Like Maggritte's famous painting of a pipe "ceci n'est pas une pipe" ie "This is Not a Pipe", this is not a novelty pencil....
In a way this is a tribute to New Plymouth and our famous Wind Wand sculpture by reknowned international kinetic artist Len Lye.
It's also a homage to blu-tack. I have recently been considering using blu-tack to "paint" with, however a cursory Google search reveals that like everything else I think of, it has already been done. This is one of the most thought provoking and stimulating sites on contemporary art I have viewed in recent years: Worsley Institute of Blu-Tack Art
