Small Plastic Baby

Small Plastic Baby
Oil on gessoed board
150x150mm
December 29, 30, 06

I've been meaning to paint this for a while now. I guess it's one of those little plastic figures from a child's doll house or something. It appealed to me, the way it sat bathed in the light, casting shadows. I guess it has many connotations. It could be Moses, or the infant Jesus, or just a plastic baby... My daughter, who thinks it looks decidedly disturbing, suggested I call it "Vitruvian Baby" after the famous Vitruvian Man. I played around with different light sources and directions and in some lights it had multiple shadows which gave it a kind of Krishna appearance. It also occured to me it was like kids making angels in the snow.

The plum tree is overburdened with fruit this season. These were a pair of early windfalls. I enjoyed painting something green for a change...

Christmas Cherries

I painted this one on christmas eve. I wasn't that happy with it and on looking at it today I decided to repaint it. The paint had dryed and it's always different painting over another layer of paint. You lose something of the freshness and immediacy of the allaprima, however you gain something else. Transparent layers and glazes of paint produce a glowing richness.

This is the last cherry I'll paint for a while. You can have too much of a good thing. Too many cherries gives you a bellyache!

Three Dark Cherries

Three Dark Cherries
Oil on gessoed board

70x70mm

Sold

We're getting through a lot of cherries in our household! I managed to salvage these three from the most recent bagfull. I liked the way the two in the backrow were "kissing" while the foremost one was alone. I toyed with the idea of titling it "Two Kissing Cherries with Gooseberry"....

My daliy paintings have been on a bit of a "go slow" the last few days while I'm working on a bigger painting for an exhibition. It's frustrating when you want to be doing two things at once! This cherry was speaking to me from the window sill, and in the end I just couldn't resist.

This postage stamp sized miniature was my second attempt today. The first painting I did didn't work and I chucked it in the bin. I'm happy with this one however.

I found these toffees included in a package of new paint I had ordered from my art suppliers. I felt I had to paint them, so I stacked them up, like "stacks on the mill". I liked the way they looked as though they were about to take flight. Whatever I'm painting, I usually find myself thinking of the paint itself as the object I'm depicting, and in this instance, it seemed like toffee.

Raw Egg in Saucer

Raw Egg in SaucerOil on gessoed board

Dec, 3, 4, 06

Some of the painters on The Daily Painters website got fed-up with painting pears and thought it would be a fun idea for everyone to paint an egg. Even though it's not Easter. I've wanted to paint an egg for a while so thought I would have a crack at it. If nothing else it's another good excuse to put down a big dob of cadmium yellow deep. I liked the way the yolk is slightly off-center. Eggcentric even...

I love painting these postage stamp sized ones! My daughter was wandering past and spied this image on my monitor screen. She remarked that it looked like "the Blueberry of Doom", as it seemed to be sucking all the light into it. I thought it was a good description. One I wouldn't have thought of!

I've been committed to painting some other paintings during the last few days so I've been painting the PAD paintings at night. I don't often paint from life at night as the light is quite different. I enjoy the nightime, when it's quiet and most people are asleep. I put on a CD of Julian Bream playing John Dowland's lute music. Very dark and mysterious music, which seemed to suit this subject and my mood.
