I saw this discarded plastic top sitting upon the grey stones on my walk by the beach.  It caught my eye and I thought it looked rather sun like.  It seems an unlikely and  banal subject matter to make a painting out of but I enjoy the mixture of banality and the sublime.

This subject has been literally sat on the shelf for some time now. I knew I wanted to paint it but for one reason or another I procrastinated until now. It has an almost "crucified" quality about it and I recalled the lyric from a Paul Simon song - "the cross is in the ball-park" . I like the cadmium yellow of the handle.

I was rummaging through my collection of plastic toys for something else when I found the pig, and the very next thing I laid my fingers on was the fake pearl. It's strange how these kinds of synchronistic things happen. The pearl was easy to paint. The pig was a little trickier.

Why are plastic pegs invariably coloured pink? Pink is an awkward colour, I've never been sure about it, I have a love/hate relationship with pure pink. But I'm always more interested in colour combinations and relationships than in any individual colour by itself. Hot pink always seems to resonate well with Mars Yellow. Mars Yellow is a synthetic oxide which resembles the traditional yellow ochre - a natural earth. But it has subtle differences and I find it the perfect foil for pink. Anyway, I was also fascinated by the surreal quality of this peg standing like some kind of sentinel or monolith. What kind of people made it? What was it for?
