There are apparently over 900 species of oxalis. I'm not sure which this one is. but it grows profusely in this "neck o' the woods", and has always been one of my favourite wildflowers. An Oxalis by any other name.....

Another one painted with a sense of urgency. I've had good value out of this particular jonquil. It's the third time I've painted it.

This is actually the same jonquil I picked for the previous painting, after it had opened up. Yesterday was a very dark, wet and miserable day here in Taranaki, and it felt good to paint something with a bit of hopeful promise. I'm trying to keep the paint as loose and free as I'm able, while hopefully still retaining something of the delicate nature of the flowers.

I got a couple of emails concerning the Unidentified Flower post of yesterday. It is in fact "Tecomanthe speciosa", a native climbing vine. Apparently, the last surviving specimen of this plant was discovered on Three Kings Island in 1945, all the rest having been eaten by goats. So all of today's plants have been propigated from this one plant. According to Wikipedia "The flowers appear to be adapted to be pollinated by bats, despite the fact that bats are not part of the present-day fauna of the Three Kings Islands (though they may once have been present). Nevertheless, the flowers of plants growing in cultivation are readily pollinated by a large number of native and exotic birds. "
