I occasionally enjoy taking a different technical approach to what I've grown accustomed to with my painting. I feel it's important to keep myself from becoming stale and mannered. Hopefully.
With these paintings I've initially put down a thin glaze of burnt umber as an imprimatura over the whole board, using a medium containing dammar and venice turpentine. This very quickly goes tacky and allows me to scumble cooler colours over the top and gives a warm glowing feeling to the picture that I believe suits the subject. The transparent areas give a nice contrast to the more thickly painted impasto parts. I enjoyed painting it anyway.

I am fascinated by the transparency you achieved in this painting. I will have to try your technique. I usually apply the first passage thinned with oderless mineral spirits, but I wonder how it might work with a product such as galkyd.

  2. Just mineral spirits wouldnt have enough "tack". I'm not sure about alkyd mediums. They are fast drying. I dont like using them, but that's just me.
