Although it's small, this painting seemed to cause me quite a bit of trouble. It's always a challenge working on a small scale with impasto paint. It would be easy to fall into temptation and get finickety with small pointed brushes and thin paint. I want to resist that as much as I can with these paintings. I like the paint to have it's own phisical presence so that it is as much about painting as it is about the object painted. There's a tension and dynamic about that kind of dichotomy that I enjoy. "I think these paintings are beautiful.They are all in thick oil paint on board, and are mostly quite small.The attention to light and composition in these reminds me of the C18th century French painter Chardin, who also used the pictorial technique of placing the edge of the table in the foreground, as seen in this painting 'Dandelion in a green bottle'.It is always nice when a painter really obviously enjoys paint. The thick globs and brustrokes that the artist has left shows their revelment in the medium, in a lovely understated way.They are not going for nearly enough.Go and put in a bid!"

Dandelion Head in Green Bottle

Dandelion Head in Green Bottle Oil on gessoed board. 120x110mm Painted April 16th.
It struck me while painting this subject that it was a fitting one for this time of year. The Dead Dandelion was a bit like a crucifixion and the seed head could represent a rebirth or resurrection. I've always felt the Easter story is more universal than the Christian version, which is just an adoption of an earlier pagan festival celebrating new life and fertility, as far as I'm aware.
