Red Star in Jar

Red Star in Jar
Oil on gessoed board

This composition of a red star shaped cookie cutter in an old sandblasted jar I found on the beach appealed to me. I'm fascinated by the double light source from the two high windows in the corner of my studio, which cast twin shadows onto things.

Hi there, Came across your blog via dailypaintings.com

This image reminded me of a Yahrtzeit candle, which Jewish people light on the anniversary of a loved one's death. The candles burn for about 24 hours and come in a simple jar-like container.

  2. Thanks ilona. That's interesting! Although I have to admit to my ignorance of that Jewish tradition, I felt there was something spiritual about the subject matter and the way I chose to present it.
