Starling Head on Marble Eggcup

Starling Head on Marble Eggcup
June 24,25,06.
oil on gessoed board.

This is what happens when you leave the studio door open overnight. I came in to find the remains of a starling - a lot of feathers mainly and this head. I guess the cat ate the rest. I thought I should paint it and tryed it on various surfaces and locations but I felt it needed to be raised up on something. I put it on one of the little gessoed boards I paint on and tryed it on top of a cup. But it was too big and I was trying all sorts of things when the obvious and poetic solution of an eggcup occurred to me. So I guess it's a painting about the cyclic nature of birth and death.
