People always assume that knights in armour are male. How can you tell under all that armour? Wilst painting this I had the lyric of a song by Kate Bush in mind. I presume it's about Joan of Arc.

Joanni, Joanni wears a golden cross
And she just looks beautiful in her armour
Joanni, Joanni blows a kiss to God
And she never wears a ring on her finger

My partner Dale, on her way home from her Tai-Kwon-doh training, stopped the car in the middle of the night when she spotted these daffs growing in a paddock, and groped around in the dark for them in her whiter than white uniform, that I disparagingly call her pyjamas. She went to such an effort to get them for me to paint, that I felt obliged to paint them, even though they are the difficult ruffled type of bloom. I find their joyfulness a bit frenetic actually. A bit like Dale herself ..

These are tiny litle jugs - part of a dolly tea-set I guess. I just thought it would be fun to paint them! Playing around with concepts of scale again.

This isn't really a painting a day painting as it was executed over several afternoons. It was a fun piece. An excersise in absurdity really! The coin was painted life size.

This is the chair I sit on when playing my guitar.

I enjoyed painting this. It differs from all the other still-lifes I've done so far in that it's a larger subject, though still painted on a similar miniature scale. In fact it has the air of doll furniture about it!

Good honest chocolate since 1896. I struggled a bit with this one. I liked the composition of the square on the circle with the shadow. It was placed on a table-mat with a John Constable rustic scene. I was tempted to paint the actual mat, JC argueably being the father of chocolate-box painting... I might yet.

I liked the purity and simplicity of this composition. I like Green and white together and I like humble flowers. AKA weeds. In this case, what we know in NZ as onionweed, Allium triquetum. We used to have a sheep called Cecil who loved this stuff. You could smell his breath from fifty paces...

Corona

Corona
oil on gessoed board
aprox 60x70mm

I felt like painting this on a virulent green background for some reason so I got out my tube of thalo green. One dab goes a long way...

I've been running low on my grind-yer-own flake white, so I had to make todays a small one! I liked the way the sun hit the bottle cap and the reflected green light. Long before I'd finished, the sun departed, so most of it was painted from memory.

A Rock For Molly

A Rock For Molly
Oil on gessoed board
August 5, 06

This unashamedly sentimental painting is in remembrance of my dog Molly who was killed a year ago out on the road. She was a wonderful dog and my best friend. She always insisted I roll rocks for her on our walks on the beach, and so now when I take my new dog I always bring a rock home for Molly to put on her grave.

What I liked about the subject was the double light source coming from the two high windows in my studio falling on the fruit in a cross like pattern. The fruit reminded me of two islands.

The mountain was looking nice and clear yesterday morning so I took the opportunity to do another little study of it. I always find something new that I hadn't noticed before. The angle of the sun changes so rapidly at this time of year and each day it highlights some detail subtely differently. It's always a battle to get as much of the painting done before the light changes all the shadows. One day this mountain wont be there anymore.
