Komene Beach is just up the road from where I live on Surf Highway 45, Taranaki. I take my dog, Fergus, for a walk there most days. This was painted from memory after one of our walks.

This is a subject revisited for me. In the early '80s I did a series of large paintings of small toy plastic animals. The kind you used to get free in breakfast cereal. I've still got the animals and felt like painting them again. This time on a much smaller scale.

I've always loved the golden glow of these oil capsules. The challenge here was in painting the rather complex shadow and refraction the twin light source was casting. I thought it had a flame like quality about it. I had two goes at it and then the painting fell on the floor -face side down of course - so I had to repaint it again .

The first landscape in this series, this was painted very quickly as the sun was setting on the mountain. Very sketchy, it is a colour study as much as anything. I'm always fascinated by the cobalt shadow that quickly moves up the mountain.

I've long wanted to try painting onto copper so this was a little experiment. It's a very interesting feel working on metal and I think it may have a lot of potential. Next time I'll find a bigger bit of copper..
